New Learner
New Learner is a conceptual font based on the idea that there should be a universal typeface for captions on children’s cartoons.
-
Cartoons aimed at children are missing out on a learning opportunity, when they limit their media to purely visual and audio.
-
A universal typeface, to be used as captions on all media directed at children, providing a consistant level of learning. The idea is that children would have an easier time learning to read if they had on baseline typeface for the content they are contantly exposed to.
-
Research began with finding out what typefaces are common within the education sector. With this information, experimentation was conducted, using Adobe Illustrator, until the ideal typeface was reached.
Process
This project begin on Procreate as research and experimentation. From there, I traced the letterforms to the best of my ability on Adobe Illustrator until I got a result that match the brief.
Final Product
New Learner is a heavy weight, serif font with a large x-height, designed to be highly legible from most distances. It is made with a mostly consistent weight and minimal contrast while also having repetitive shapes with very slight differentiation.
